The Energy Agency, in partnership with NHS (Ayrshire and Arran), South Ayrshire Council and East Ayrshire Council is currently conducting an evaluation project to investigate the potential benefits of External Wall Insulation (EWI).
There are known links between cold homes, poor health and fuel poverty but at present few studies have investigated the success of the Scottish Government funded insulation schemes in alleviating these issues. Households receiving EWI upgrades as part of the Area Based Schemes (ABS) initiative during 2016 will therefore be monitored over the winter months in order to assess any changes in energy efficiency performance and household fuel expenditure, following the intervention.
In addition, an investigation of the health and well-being of the occupants, both prior to and after the insulation upgrades will also be conducted in order to provide more detailed evidence regarding the links between both general health and specific long term health problems and the thermal conditions experienced within the home.
Results from the study will be reported in early 2017.
