Energy Agency Celebrates Major Milestone
The Nethermills Hydro Scheme, situated on the River Ayr, has achieved a significant milestone by generating its 1,000,000th unit of electricity, equivalent to the amount of electricity consumed by 350 homes in a year. This accomplishment underscores the project’s commitment to sustainable energy and its positive impact on the local community.

Wholly owned and operated by Energy Agency Renewables Ltd, a not-for-profit subsidiary of the Energy Agency based in Ayr, Nethermills Hydro Scheme became operational in February 2022.

Beyond energy production, the Nethermills Hydro Scheme serves as an educational resource, offering learning opportunities for local schools and colleges. The 1M units produced by Nethermills thus far has saved around 207,000kg of CO2 compared to grid-produced electricity.
The attainment of the 1M unit generation milestone not only highlights the project’s success in renewable energy production but also its role in promoting environmental stewardship and community development. As the scheme continues to operate, it stands as a testament to the effective integration of sustainable technology within the community.
