Local Energy Scotland

Local Energy Scotland is an independent network funded by Scottish Government established to help community groups become involved in community renewables, whether taking forward a community owned scheme or engaging in a large-scale commercial project. Now also open to Housing Associations and Local Authorities.

A consortium made up of Energy Saving Trust (EST), Changeworks, Energy Agency, and SCARF are administering and managing the Community and Renewable Energy Scheme (CARES) from the 1st August 2013. Ricardo-AEA will also support delivery.

For more information, email our CARES Development Officer or contact 01292 521896.

Community And Renewable Energy Scheme (CARES)

The Scottish Government’s Community and Renewable Energy Scheme (CARES) offers a range of financial support to local energy projects. We can also help you with ongoing support, mentoring, advice and more.

Let’s Do Net Zero: Community Buildings Fund – Available to communities developing renewable energy and heat decarbonisation projects. Up to £80K available for eligible groups.

Technical Advice Framework – Established in 2022, available to eligible projects. This will help to make the process of progressing your project quicker and easier. This will include services such as project feasibility, planning, project due-diligence and technical advice.

Case Studies – This can be a good starting point if you are looking for inspiration. We have many great success stories featured on our website to give you a little insight to the process and work involved in kicking off your own project.

Enablement, Development, and Off Electricity Grid funds are all currently closed for new applications. Although development funding will generally be a part of the Grant Offer, we present to groups upon successful application to CARES. Click here to read more about CARES or if you would rather speak to someone, contact our Local Development Officer, Kathleen Painter, who can give you practical advice and talk you through your ideas or issues.
